I have downloaded and paid for smart ftp and have some webpages ready to upload, but couldn’t connect to my virginmedia web space apparently owing to having a dot in the username of my email address

I learned that I am able to change this and set about doing so and even got an email telling me “All done! Your My Virgin Media username has been changed to
dgillanders@virginmedia.com. From now on, you'll need to use your new username to sign in to My Virgin Media.”
So I attempted to sign in using my new username without the offensive dot and was informed that I need to (quote): “Check the inbox for your email address
dgillanders@virginmedia.com and look for an email from Virgin Media”
My problem, how can I click on to confirm an email sent to an email address that I need to confirm before signing into?
I click the box to have another email sent and checked again, but could only get into the email address that was supposed to have changed and can’t get into the one without the dot and I think I’m going dotty!
Can anyone tell me if I’m missing something simple? I seem to be trapped in a catch 22 and its driving me crazy!
