That's the point. Firmware recovery mode waits until you manually upload new firmware to it. If you don't, well it keeps waiting.

It'd depend on the firmware - the default Netgear would be .0.1, but the very popular dd-wrt and others default to 1.1. Maybe that's where he saw it mentioned?

Nevertheless I've seen this kind of behaviour quite often - I've bought a few off ebay that have been described as thus, quick 2-minute firmware recovery gets it working again and nets me a bargain. Obviously you wouldn't expect your average customer to have to do that with a new warrantied unit, but gladly I'm not into being your average customer.

Also depending on the revision it's *supposed* to go into firmware recovery mode if you hold the reset button for ~6 seconds, but only during power on - some of them do it even after poweron for 30 seconds.
