to use the free version Paragon backup & restore

1. Run the program & click on 'backup disk or partition' top left
2. The 'backup wizard' should run - click 'next'
3. On the 'what to backup' screen click the the box next to 'basic hard disk 0', click 'next'.
4. Choose 'save data to local/network drives', click 'next'.
5. Choose the external disk as the backup destination. Click 'next'.
6. Choose 'backup now'. Click 'next' & the backup should begin.

Take the option to 'build recovery media' from the tools menu - this will burn a CD you can boot from in the event of, for example, your main disk getting a virus, which you can then use to restore a 'clean' backup from the external disk.
