Try new batteries, but DO NOT reverse the batteries, you could kill the remote.

It is quite possible for remotes to mis-signal when the batteries are fading, more usually giving wrong commands to their own device.

A few devices, unfortunately not that common, do have a backup code set/channel option to resolve genuine remote conflicts.
