the spring toggle is designed to fix lightweight objects to plasterboard or thin sheets of plywood ,trying to get the toggle through a 3inch piece of wood will be very hard ,if done correctly wood screws will be quite sufficient i would use a 2 or 2"x10 pre drilled with a 4 mm drill
