It would seem intermittent input problems are a known issue with Aquos TV's. HDMI is especially vulnerable apparently. So the I/O board and processor board have been changed. According to the engineer who did mine the old boards will be retuned for a firmware update and bench check before being sent out as service spares again.

As this is a known issue and not a random hardware fault I think I will be writing to Sharp for a contribution to the service cost. The support arrangement and call out were efficient, polite and quick, but you MUST have the serial number. It was not cheap, but has extended the warranty on the repaired parts.
