Thanks guys, I'll whack em on a USB stick and take them to the problematic pc.
I tried the USB wireless receiver on a laptop and it worked fine so it can't be that.

I'm going to uninstall the driver software on the PC and reinstall it to make sure the right driver was installed. When I installed it on the laptop there were lots of different wireless adapter driver models to chose from and I'm thinking that maybe she installed the wrong one.
If the driver for a slightly different model of USB wireless receiver was installed would it still semi work?
That could be why it's picking up the signal, saying it's connected but not actually connecting?
