Another thought is, when a box (sky etc) is connected to a scart tv, there is something like a 9v switch wire to auto switch the tv to that scart. Also can u switch to the relevant scart connector with the remote?

Yup, the TV is a 32" LCD just a year old - I have the manual but bugger all in that re the scarts (well, other than connecting stuff to them)
The TV does recognise that something is switched on, it goes to a blue screen if you turn on the DVD or the Sky+ - Whatever is going on the TV definately knows a scart is being actioned - It only will display a blue screen though.
