defo go at <i>least</i> 1K off the sticker to start. in todays climate, go 2K and let him 'work' you up to 1k off. I tend to have an amount I feel is fair in my head, then double the amount I'm taking off and ask for that. that way, you get a bargain if it's more than you planned and the dealer feels he's done well to make you agree on a higher price than you offered!

be cheeky... what's the worst that will happen? they'll say no... so what?
