the host name is a string of data, that identifies you on the Internet similar to the IP. eg.

Our tools tend not to show the customer number as shown above as all we need is the MAC address of the modem to access account details which in turn tells us what uBR and cable you are on and if you are online.
The above number would show up if we did a nslookup of the IP address, you can try this via
http://tools.virginmedia.com/
