It's worth noting that for digital cables the signal either gets through or doesn't.
Actually, this is just a general point for everyone. While good cabling does make a difference for analogue signals, there are a lot of people who tell you don't need expensive cables even in that case.
A friend of mine has done a lot of work with high end Audio systems and reckons that the best speaker cable (for instance) is actually standard two wire mains cable (with the external insulation), because the insulation required for safety actually ensures very low signal loss.
Also, bear in mind Ethernet Cables. You can get these for as little as £2 or £3 for 5 metres, and they have to ensure little signal loss for distances of up to 100 metres.
