Re: Catch-up reading scheme 'success'
The report is talking about six year old children for Christ’s sake, I would have thought that most parents with no training could manage that if they could just drag themselves, and their children, away from the box for a short time each week, I know my Mother did.
My first two schools were C of E, they produced very poor results but in those days a Teacher had a job for life regardless of competence, not that anyone was ever tested once they had taken up their vocation.
My third school was a Secondary Modern, I would say that 20% of the teachers were very good with the others not worth a light. Four years of music lessons and not one person in the class had a clue at the end. Luckily, and it probably was luck, we had excellent teachers for Maths, Science and Engineering, funnily enough most people did well in those subjects.
We get the same BS about the dedicated people in the Health Service, I have had a lot of dealings with people in the Health Service due to the poor health of my Mother.
My Mother went to A&E with a broken arm, she went in with her wedding ring and two diamond rings on her hand and came out after having a temporary cast put on, minus all the rings. An investigation failed to find them. My Sister was telling her friend about it, her friend had exactly the same experience with her Mother, she advised us to put in a claim as she had done, eventually after much delay and fobbing off my Mothers claim was accepted.
Social Services, again manned by dedicated people wishing to help the old and vulnerable.
My Mother used to have two carers come in to see to her meals, washing and cleaning, £14 ph each.
When small items go missing you tend to think that they have been mislaid, one day they had the local Vac and Washer shop come and remove two washing machines, a nice little earner that would have gone unnoticed with many elderly people. A complaint to Social Services was met with a stone wall, nobody was interested.
Then there was the time they somehow managed to split the toilet cistern causing water to pour through to the living room ceiling, after jamming a toilet brush into the cistern they ran off without telling anyone.
I won’t go on about the key safe she has fitted outside her house, this is to allow access in an emergency, my Mother lives on a busy main road with lots of people passing at all hours, just to say that leaving the safe open is not unknown, together with losing the key and failing to mention it.
It’s only when you have to deal with these people that you discover the total incompetence inherent in a system where people don’t get sacked for being useless or worse.
Is it any wonder that I now find myself talking down to so called “Dedicated People”.
