I'd argue that it's not a driving factor - in fact, I wouldn't be at all surprised if there are lots of people following religion who don't necessarily believe in an afterlife. Just because you believe in God (or Allah, or whoever) doesn't automatically follow on that you believe in everything that's associated with that belief.
For that matter, I'm personally aware of quite a few people who believe in an afterlife, but don't believe in God. Neither of these groups are wrong, but it doesn't make it a driving factor in their lives.
