A test to see who is providing decent speeds.

The well known Broadband information site, Samknows.com is seeking volunteers to mount a nationwide test of ISP networks.

Those participating in the test will be sent a Linksys WRT54GL with custom firmware that when active, will periodically run 10 tests to test various things such as HTTP downloads from well known sites and ping tests..

The idea behind the tests is that it can help Samknows provide an *accurate* assessment of an ISP, and they can help users to assess whether the ISP is right for them..

The register also notes that it could cause questions to be asked of ISPs who advertise one speed and offer a lot of their customers one that is considerably lower.

A couple of things worth noting:

They don't want heavy downloaders. Apparently, people who download more than 30 gig a month distort the results.
The units will upload 500 meg a month, and download about 2 gig a month, so thos people who have download caps need to be aware of that.
