Most firewalls are easy to set up. When something wants to connect to the internet, the firewall pops up to ask you whether to allow it ALWAYS, THIS ONCE or NEVER. Just click the box and you are away. 99 times out of 100 you know whether it is safe by the name of the programme.
Problems sometimes arise for file and printer sharing between computers and, for instance X Box 360, on a home network, but good firewalls will have a fairly easily found box to tick to allow this (most allow this by default).
