I'd be really glad if you can point me to where I could learn about firewalls. (I know the principle of firewalls, but not the technical settings).

When I removed Norton, it automatically turned on Windows FW so I never had to change any settings, and so far it doesn't seem to have blocked anything 'vital' (but i don't know how to check the contrary, i.e. whether it hasn't blocked something that should be blocked).
If I have to change to Comodo, I'll need to learn about firewalls, especially if at the installation it requires me to say what to block. Does it have default settings that I can use without having to change them?

As additional precaution, I always log in on my machine with a user account (I use administrator only for updating Windows and antispy), which I read is quite a safe thing, at least to limit the damage of a potential attack.
