AVG Free is as good as most, and costs nothing.

The Adaware service does not use loads of memory. I've used this program on thousands of machines without the problems you have experienced. It is most likely that it did not install correctly, i've seen it a few of times, but that's the exception not the norm. It's not the best out there, but it is still ok.

I wouldn't go near *any* suite with a barge pole.
A suite is normaly antivirus, antispyware and firewall.
Just because a company does one a good job at removing virus removal, does not mean they will do a good job at removing spyware or implementing a firewall.
Stick to seperate applications, you will have much greater control and security that way.
