How much memory do you have? Xp needs at least 1gb, preferably 2. My granddaughter's came with 516mb, was useless running xp ,even with two 512 mb sticks (the most that would fit.)
I installed her Windows 2000 Pro, it runs like a dream.However, I don't know where you'd find w2k these days.

I've used adaware on tons of machines, and it is not a real hog.
XP does not need at least 1GB at all.
Memory requirements for the original XP was 64 MB.
Most people would be able to get by with 512 MB.
