Fairly similar thing happened to me a few years back now when I was with my 1st company.

We'd taken on this girl as a tech just for the summer, while she was in between years at University (so no degree, obviously). She'd worked for us previously as a temp. tech. the previous year, while at college.

Found out she was being paid slightly more than me & one of the other techs, and the same as another who was on slightly more than me...Despite the three of us being Graduates, & despite us being full time permanent employees who'd been there a couple of years.

I kicked up a fuss...Politely.

End result, they finally realised (or reluctantly admitted) that the three of us were being paid sweet FA compared to "the industry average", & we got quite nice pay raises at the next review.


People pay what they think they can get away with.

At my current place, one of my workmates used to be on a few grand less than me, despite being the same age & doing exactly the same job, simply because when he joined the year after me, they got away with offering him ever so slightly more than the crappy wage his last place paid him.
