I think the researchers (as quoted in the BBC article) are taking a few liberties as to what might be possible in the near future.

I'm somewhat hesitant about a lot of this imaging research. As far as I'm concerned it shows little more than different parts of the brain lighting up when doing different tasks. It's very popular at the moment though, and attracts a lot of funding.
