I'll be astounded if this is the first time he's been inside for driving whilst disqualified. Normally the courts look on it in the same way as contempt of court and after being caught a couple of times you are looking at a spell inside.
He might be playing the "I'm mental and can't help myself" card to try and avoid being locked up.
Still some people wouldn't like to see him locked up as he's not a violent offender (well not any more allegedly) and he should be given community based punishments instead. I think in this case it's an example of someone who clearly hasn't paid any attention to previous convictions and locking him up is the only way to avoid him driving.
