A grand is going to buy quite a serious laptop. Think though what you really want to use it for. Laptops aren't that easy to upgrade, so you either buy cheaply and expect to replace swiftly, or you buy well hoping for longevity.
Are you buying for portability, or as a desktop replacement? Battery life, weight and size affect mobility, but the lighter and smaller tends to equate to increased cost. Are you wanting to play games (desktops remain far more versatile with far superior graphics capabilities). Think of connectivity, not just network, but bluetooth and various media cards for cameras.
