I've been trying to get away from virgin for a a while as they conned me into a new contract with a pretty poor retentions deal but they never told me this would mean I had a new contract or that it would tie me in for another year.

If they didn't tell you
at the time then you are NOT tied in. Simply state that it was never mentioned you would be accepting a new contract and as such you are under no obligation to stay.
VM will do
anything to try and keep a customer, even to the extent of lieing that your under a contract or the price rise isn't a reason to leave. You have to stick to your guns and be persistent if you intend to cancel.
