It may not have been faulty. Windows Media player uses little bits of software called "Codecs" to decode audio and video. It doesn't come with every codec available, but can usually download any codecs. However, it can only download codecs that Microsoft approve of. A lot of videos available on the Internet either use a codec called divx, or one called xvid. Neither of which is approved by Microsoft.
Codec Packs (like the aforementioned klite codec pack) contain all the most common ones in one easy to install package.
