Tamiy do some very good self assemby kits

You can either get a battery powered car, this will need loads of batteries.

Or get petrol powered (my preference), this will need running in, and may need more maintenance.

try model shops in the area and see if there are any clubs in your area.

Ok just read petrol not perfered, but don't rule it out yet.
