The earlier STBs could only handle 1meg broadband, and the later Pace and Samsung only 4 meg. Unless your needs are limited the modem is the only option.

Simplest thing is to put a splitter by the STB location, and connect the modem there instead of via the current lead. But if you DIY this be very careful about the quality of the cable and splitter. Get it wrong and you will degrade your service, and perhaps your neighbours. Strictly speaking customers shouldn't mess with the cables on the street side of any modem / STB. If in doubt, it will cost, but get VM to relocate it.
