Actually, that is *not* normal practice. Apple tend to do that, but they are the only company that I know of that does. Apple also have a reputation (admittedly not always justified) for delivering reliable and innovative products and services, which they have earned over the last 30 years or so.
Play TV is a new company, and, therefore has no reputation good or bad. To launch with limited details of the company and products/services available is suicide.

I believe the distance-selling laws (which apply if you order over the web or from a telesales person) apply. These laws ENFORCE a cooling-off period. So, if Play TV cause problems, you at least have something you can take them to court with.
