I think It's sad. My Grandfather died in 1978 from pneumoconiosis (aka miners disease). He had been ill for at least 15 years prior to this, living only with the 24 hour oxygen supply he had. My gran was a widow from '78 until she died in 2002 aged 90. She had applied for compensation when the scheme was introduced but sadly died before she had anything. She had a measly state pension to live on in a council house she had rented for 50 years (due to my grandads illness they couldn't afford their own place).
But she was lucky. She has a huge family and we all adored her and looked after her. What about the people who have no-one?
If these allegations are deemed to be correct it's a very sad reflection on our country/society.
