The EXT Link has tricked ya its not in stand bye its just stopped out putting a video signal the units sitting ready to go in under 1 second if you using the DVD Ram, the lasers parked in the right spot just waiting the data to record.

Er to answer your question, you can do that yourself. as i don't have an answer, im affraid.
Just instead of changing channels try the Guide button on the DVD remote, a few times, if it comes up and the ext link stays on then the HDD drive or dvd ram should record as its not using the freeview tuner. If the guide comes up you might like to set it to record to the other device that ext link isn't using just to test that as well.
