Manchester is the archetypal New Labour city - they had their conference there last year. It's the New Blackpool.

The press release is interesting, it says that

Why not put it in London then? None of the 17 announced are in London, as it happens. Could this be because it would be just a bit obvious after Prescott's cowboy antics?

None of the silly 'Respect' zones announced the other week are in London, either, as an off-topic aside.
