Need Help , Don't Know What to Do!
Hey
i got a big problem as well as the other guys here. I am a student and I moved into the property last september. Then we installed NTL internet services. We told them that we are only 8 months in the UK and then we will move. They said it would be no problem to cancel. So last month i wrote a letter to cancel the service. Then they told me that i could not cancel the contract beacuse it is a 12 month contract. Then i wrote another letter in which explained the situation and that i will leave the UK and new tenants wil move into the house. I didn't receive a letter by now. So what can i do ? what will happen if a leave the UK and didn't get a answer from them?? Please tell me . Thank you in advance.

Re: Need Help , Don't Know What to Do!
hi
I may be mistaken, but I thought NTL had a 9 month student contract, for your type of situation?
As for what will happen - for you, probably nothing, you are leaving the UK, but the new tenants may have problems getting their own account?? Not sure, tbh..
Hopefully someone with more knowledge of NTL systems will be able to inform you further on this, but personally I think it would be in NTL's interest to allow you to cancel, without penalty and for the new tenant to set up a new student account in their name. That way NTL get paid, rather than spending money chasing a 'debt' they may find it difficult to collect.

NTL will not be able to go after you for any money if you no longer live in the UK!
So don't worry about it!

But if they want to return to the UK, the account holder may find it difficult to get credit.
As homealone said, if you had a student contract this is 9 months, as opposed to the normal 12. You will therefore be liable for 9 months charges, however if you want to PM me (click the "SendPM" button at the bottom of my post) with your name, account number, and a contact phone number i will pass these details to our contact at ntl to get this sorted out

Simply state to ntl that you are moving property and would like to take your sevices with you. When that ask for the address give them it. They cannot supply you with services so by their own terms and conditions will have to release you from the contract.
I had digital tv installed then had to move 2 months later and got it all cancelled no probs.

Phone up customer dis-services in the morning, explain that your a student wanting to cancel, be armed with your NUS, ISIC or university admissions/library number and you'll be able to cancel, no problem. If you carry on having issues PM me your account number, and I'll put the disconnection request in for you myself.

of course the very worse case is that you pay the 3 months 'outstanding' and go home with a clear conscience....
- however, I feel that, because you thought the contract was only for the period you told them in the first call, as you are a student, that you should have your account cleared, which frees up the address for the next tenant.*
I would try Chris W's offer of help from the site contacts
* (to go through the same thing )

Thats why I asked for some form of student ID, regardless of what your contract stipulates your only held to 9 months of that contract if you can prove your a student.

Errm, actually this was changed towards the end of last year. They will still hold you to that contract these days even if your moving to a non-serviceable area, so this course of action would be a non-starter.

Dammit thats sneaky of them , that was a good loop hole.
I hope they explain this to people starting contracts because people move all the time and it will cause trouble.

This is NTL we're talking about. Not likely! Having just read through the updated version of the residential customer service agreement I notice they mention about you being able to cancel within the contract if there is a major reduction in service (i'm guessing something like interactive services disappearing from the TV or the like) - I'm wondering though if this could be used as a get out clause though.
