Cancellation problem -

Hi,
unsure if this is in the correct forum just wanted a bit of advice before I phoned NTL.
Phoned to cancel broadband at the end of November and was told my cancellation date would be December 11th. However I've had a bill for both December and now one for January containing charges for the broadband service I thought I know longer received as I've now moved to ADSL (previously had phne with NTL too.)
Is this likely to be a case of tough I'm going to have to pay both of these bills as the service hasn't been cancelled (through no fault of my own) ? even though my modem has been unplugged since end of November and I haven't been using the service.
A second question. If NTL agree to refund me as I thought the service had been cancelled am I entitled to a refund for Decembers bill as well as January ? as they charged me double for October to move to paying a month in advance.
I get the horrible feeling that it's going to end up as my word against NTLs and I'm going to have to pay both bills until someone properly cancels my broadband service.

Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks in advance

Cancellations are normally 30 days notice so if you phoned to cancel end of November then your cancellation would be end of December. If your bill was produced before the cancellation went through then it would have the "normal" charges on it and then credit back the difference on the next bill. Best to ring and check the exact dates and that it has definately now been cancelled.

How long did you have your contract with NTL for BB? (If it's less than 12 months I would pay the bill and stay quiet as you could be asked to pay out the 12 month period. )
In our experience it's never a good idea to cancel via phone and you should always follow up the phone call with a letter sent by recorded delivery so that you have proof you sent them the letter on a set date and that they received it.

Re: Cancellation problem -

I'd been with NTL for nearly 4 years so the contract thing won't be an issue.
Wish I'd sent a follow up letter now but hindsight is a wonderful thing. Should have known not to just trust a phone conversation, especially after seeing so many threads on here with people having difficulties cancelling

Re: Cancellation problem -

I had the same problem,I cancelled my BB and phone on the 28 sept 2005 and went back to BT on the 28 Nov 2005.I to was getting bills for the next following 2 months.
After the first bill arrived I phone NTL explaining that I had gone back to BT giving them the dates and they said sorry and it won't happen again.
The next month was the same another bill and another call to NTL, explained again and again they said sorry and cancelled my account again.
The problem seemed to be with me taking my NTL phone number with me over to BT.
I am just waiting to see if it happens again this month.
Oh and they canceled any outstanding money they said I owed (for services I didn't have) as well
