Moving a Modem[which cabling]?

I have a NTL200 modem that connects to my PC by ethernet. My loft conversion is just about finished and i need to set the PC up there. Where can i buy [if its possible] the cabling with connectors fitted?

It would probably be easier to extend the ethernet lead - NTL dont look kindly on people messin' with anything their end of the USB/ Ethernet sockets.

Was trying to keep the cost down to as little as possible.Although depending on how much the cabling is ,it may work out cheaper.

Re: Moving a Modem[which cabling]?

Any decent high street computer shop will be able to provide, or make you up, an ethernet cable.

It's generally frowned upon to try and extend the ntl cable, prior to the modem, although you can get ntl to do this for you. There is a risk, if you get it wrong, of causing interference in the ntl network affecting your own or your neighbour's signals, or at least as the cable lenght changes the signal strength could be affected by the extra cable length. If you must go down the ntl cable extension route, standard coaxial cable is inadequate. You need something which includes good shielding.

Re: Moving a Modem[which cabling]?

You could extend to 25m no problems. Someone like www.microdirect.co.uk would have a 30m UTB (non-cross over) cable for about £6.45. Elsewhere 20m is about £3-4 I'd say. But microdirect to Linksys wireless G routers for about £45 and that's a lot neater.

The cable ntl use is not standard TV coax. That kind of cable would be unsuitable for long runs. There would be too much loss & the screening would be inadequate. Double screened cable, such as FT100, would be needed.

I'm sorry but can a mod remove or edit the above post.

You simply will not get the ntl system to run over 'normal coax'

You certainly will not get away with it fullstop.

You need RG6 sheilded cable with proper crimped on connectors.

We wouldn't normally edit dodgy advice in posts m8 ... if we did, we'd be very busy

I think you've done a fine job of setting the record straight.

Re: Moving a Modem[which cabling]?

Any passing NTL engineers in the Huntingdon area? What connectors would someone need if they went down the Dbl Shielded RG6 route?
