NTL Offers

Looking for a bit of transparency here.

I have never paid the standard pricing for ntl TV and phone. I always insist on a £10 discount, and I always get it. Yesterday they said they were running an offer for £10 for Family Pack for 6 months, not including line rental. Before that, for the last few years I had a £10.50 discount each month.

Is this typical? Does anyone really pay the full price?

What makes you think that you can insist on a discount on an advertised price? Do you ask for a £10 discount off your weekly shop in Asda? (or whatever your supermarket of choice is)
And more the fools ntl for giving in it to you!

If there is a current special offer going on, then fair enough, but insisting that you have a discount is one hell of a cheek.

Yes, always have paid the full price for the services I recieve.
It's simple - I don't use the phone and refuse to pay for it.

I don't want to start this topic again (been discussed at length on other threads) but if I used Sky I would not have to pay for a phone line rental (at least not after year 1).

While ntl will provide me a similar service at the same price as Sky, I am tempted to stay.

The minute ntl insist on charging me £30 is the same minute I switch.

And in answer, yes I do expect reductions in my shopping bill at Asda or anywhere else - bottom line is I won't pay more than someone else for the same thing. If Tesco offer something cheaper I will ask Asda to match the price. Either they do (they always do, by the way) or I drive to Tesco.

On my income I have to do what I can to make ends meet. Paying over the odds is against my core beliefs.

Remember, ntl can always say "no, we can't make a profit on that price, please go elsewhere." The fact that they don't do this signifies they are charging over the odds.

Am I making sense?

Which is not quite the same thing as getting a discount for something you are using.

It doesn't signify anything of the sort.

You are not using part of the service (the phone) and are lucky enough to have managed to persuade them to knock off the £10 phone charge because of this, which is not something that would normally happen. You are still paying full price for the tv service you have.

Re: NTL Offers

Quite honestly I'd tell you to sling your hook if you presented yourself to me demanding a discount/reduction in whatever. You give the impression that it's your god given right to get money off and if you don't get it then you throw your dummy. Almost everyone has a limited amount of money but most people don't expect companies to subsidise their lifestyle

I suppose the point I wanted to make is that they have a choice, don't they?

They aren't a charity - if they couldn't make a profit out of providing the service to me then they'd say no.

I don't expect anyone to subsidise anything. The price they offer is not fixed (nothing in life is) and I am negotiating with them to a price I am willing to pay. That's economics. Equally, you'll appreciate I don't want to subsidise any companies!

Re: NTL Offers

Ntl force the phone line because the tv service is more or less break even especially on the premium channels, if you was a tv only customer (no net/phone) you would likely be a burden on ntl.

Re: NTL Offers

If you ask me the only reason why NTL's tv service ain't making any money is because what money they do make they loose having to send engineers out to replace their crappy boxes every five mins!

Who's fault is that? NTL's after all what dum idiot did they employ who decided to put all there eggs in one basket??

I've never heard of any other company who relies upon a device supplied by a third party in order to provide their service and simply reling upon one manufacturer.

ohhh not to mention because of all the green boxes that are left flapping in the wind!

Ahh, thats a bit different, if you'd said that to start with things would have been a bit clearer.
And I agree, I would be well miffed if I had ntl tv and HAD to have the phone line when I didn't want it, but we won't go into all that here!

Again, thats fair enough, but not quite what I said!

Surely for a couple of pence (which is usually what the difference is), having to leave one supermarket, make you way to the other one and pay the cheaper price would be more inconvenient and expensive than just paying a few pence more? Sounds like you cut your nose of to spite your face....

" bottom line is I won't pay more than someone else for the same thing. "

But you're not are you?
If you and I are in tesco's and we are both at the milk counter, the price advertised on the counter is what we both pay.

Not knocking it, good luck to you, but to drive to another store to save a few pennies or even if you save a pound on your bill, will that cover the petrol?

What I will do however, when it comes to buying music cd's, if I see one I cannot wait for off the internet, I will walk to about three shops which are spaced a few hundred yards apart and buy at the best price, I will not do this " price match " thing, but I have in the past said to the girl that if they knocked £1.50 off I would buy it there, she could have rightly said to me " Do one elvis " but on that occasion it worked.

I rarely, if ever, have to actually drive somewhere else. The key is that (as long as I save more than the petrol), I would be prepared to. All you often have to do is ask them to match the price / offer at another store.

It works like this - say Tesco has an offer of half price Coke this week. I ask Asda to match the offer. I pay the Tesco price but still buy it from Asda. So no driving, just saving £££.

Pennies add up.

How about the mobile phone networks, they rely on the devices of initially Nokia, Motorola and Ericsson, certainly when Orange launched you had the choice of the Nokia Orange or the Motorola c501(?), not much choice really. You could rightly say that a 1000,2000 and 4000 box are three different ones from the same provider and also that now they have Samsung as a providor there is lesser reliance, and in time PVR will be another providor.

Just with the phone network if you spill coffee on your phone it is your problem, not the network providors.
