Am I going to be able to get a better deal?

Hey all. Have a (brief-ish) question about tariff pricing and hoped y'all would perhaps be able to advise me on what to expect.

My dad's the account holder for our VM services at home, and we currently get 20MB broadband, which we've had for aaaaaages. We've been paying £38.50 p/m for absolutely yonks (at least two years after our initial contract expired). I finally got around to prodding my Dad into upgrading, and with his permission called up and switched to 30MB (at the sticker price of £28.50 p/m). Since then, he's had a change of heart and (rightfully, really) gotten annoyed at the fact that not only have VM been charging him more for less for two years, but that they were charging him £30 for a phone call. Sure, you could consider it payment for a superhub, but it's up to VM to give you the kit you require for the service.

Anyway: he called up and aired his grievances. The lady he spoke to offered to waive the activation fee, but when he asked whether he could switch to 50MB and get some sort of discount in light of the fact he'd been overpaying for so long, she absolutely refused to budge from the sticker price. He called their bluff and cancelled, so… given that people here have apparently been offered 50MB for £25 p/m, how likely is it that retentions will get in touch properly and offer something along those lines? Normally I'd just wait and see, but I'm mindful of the time of year and am slightly concerned that the 30 days will elapse with the retentions staff being off work/hungover for most of it

(Sorry for all the detail, some of which is probably irrelevant! Just didn't want to frame it as a straight 20MB-50MB question. Also, the VM internet is the only service we have with them, in case that's relevant.)

1st off the billing price for 20mb is £37 not £38.50. he would also have got a discount applied to the whole whole package which is normally applied to the bb price in all the adverts. if no discount was given that is why the 30mb bb suddenly got cheaper as not everyone has a discount.

2nd you may recieve a call from outbound retentions but this is not gaurenteed.

edit to ammend wording error

£37 for 20Mb? What fool would pay that when...

30Mb has a "sticker" price of £28.50 on its own or £18.50 if bundled with a phoneline.

50Mb has a "sticker" price of £35 on its own or £25 if taken with a phoneline.

In 2011 who in there right mind would pay £37 for a none business 20Mb broadband connection?
