Leaving VM after serving minimum contract length - when can i cancel my Direct debit?

Hi there,

I signed up to VM broadband L for 12 months in October 2010. I rang last month to give 30 days notice of my intention to leave, meaning that my contract should end on 18th December. I was wondering if anyone could tell me the procedure for ending the contract ?

I was told that I would receive a phone call to arrange the collection of the modem/router, will that happen closer to the 18th Dec ?

Also, I pay via direct debit covering the period from the 8th of each month till the 7th of the next month. Does this mean that when I have paid for the period from 8th December - 7th January I will be free to cancel my direct debit, and can I expect a refund for the period of 18th December - 7th Jan ?

Anyway, thanks for any help you can give me.

Adam

IMO it is most important to get confirmation of the agreed arrangement in writing.

The DD should be cancelled automatically but in case it isn't you will have your confirmation letter to fall back on as proof if you need to escalate any issues.

Personally I would cancel it immediately. They can still bill you for anything owed.

It's so long since I took out my contract with VM (or Cabletel as they were then) that I can't quite remember. But I think that you are billed any standing charges in advance. I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong.

If this is the case, then you should only be billed for anything outside your package.

I have had many gripes with VM over the years, but I personally think that they are the best of a bad bunch. So I would weigh things up carefully before leaving them. It could be a case of 'better the devil you know'.

Personally I wouldn't cancel the DD. VM should cancel it for you when the account is closed.

Am I right in thinking that you actually work for VM?

I know VM will probably cancel the DD, but I've had occasions where companies have continued to take money due to admin errors. And it's easy enough to pay by cheque or card. So is there really any problem with cancelling the DD now?

If you cancel the direct debit before the final bill they will add a non-direct debit payment charge, £5 I believe.

That all depends if you actually owe anything over and above your package.
