put into new contract despite canceling

Hey guys bit of advice needed again

If anyone recalls i posted about an offer i was given with some blackberry's i was missold on the phone

http://www.cableforum.co.uk/board/93...r-loyalty.html

anyway long story short, same day i phoned them up and cancelled, and as requested i've sent back my phones with the packaging they gave me.

Now just got back from holiday and found a letter from Virgin saying i've agreed to a new 12 month contract.

Virgin are now claiming it's because i've signed up to this when i got the mobiles, despite the fact i've cancelled it and sent the phones back. and so i'm stuck with them for another 12 months.

My brother has lost the recipt proof that i've sent the phones back and customer services won't say a think untill i can contact cancellations (which aren't open till Monday). So if i get virgin mobile to confirm that the account with the phone is cancelled do i have a right to get virgin media to tear up the new 12 month contract, or am i stuck with them? also if the latter is it worth taking up with Trading standards?
