Changing Direct Debit details online

I wonder if someone can please tell me if I can change my DDM details online? I have a joint bank account with my Husband, but we are both authorised to set up DDM's and don't need to both authorise this but when I went online to change my details the website says the following:

If you're not the only person authorised to set up a Direct Debit from this account (if it's a joint account, for example) you can't set up a Direct Debit online. To do it by post, please request a paper mandate.

So does this mean I'm not allowed to do it myself online, even though my bank allow me to set up DDM's by myself? I hope someone from Virgin can clarify this for me. Thanks.

You'll have to do it via a Paper mandate.

Ok, thank you for the reply. Seems weird that Virgin won't let me do it myself online though as I'm sure when I set it up originally I did it on the telephone and not via a paper mandate? I could understand it if our bank requested we both authorise any new DDM's jointly, but they don't!

Re: Changing Direct Debit details online

To be honest, you should have been sent a paper mandate when you did it via the phone.

did you try to set it up or did you just stop when you read that? if you are authorized then it should work

I just stopped and came out of it. Like you say, I don't see why I shouldn't be able to do it, but didn't chance it in case it mucked my account up and I had problems with my bills.

TBH its only a warning for if its a joint account that needs both permissions. If as you say you can set it up alone I see no issue myself

Re: Changing Direct Debit details online

Please be aware that you have to have a nil balance before you can change a direct debit. I want to change my bank details, but even though the payment has been taken today, the online page still shows the amount owing. So I guess I'll try again tomorow, but I rang and they said you can't change it until the balance shows nil.
