However when I enter my account number it says:

Depends on your area. At last count there were 18 billiing references ranging from 1-18.
Mine is 9
If yours is 10-18 the 1st digit should be a 1.(I think)
Also make sure there's no spaces after you finish typing the acc number.

Re: Trying to sign up to Online billing but only have 8 digit AC Number Need 9?!
My area reference is 31 and my account number is a nine digit number and starts with a '7'.
I successfully signed up on 19th march after receiving an e-mail from VIrgin Media. I had pre-registered a few months back and received 50p/month discount from that time.
I have discovered that my bill for August 2007 has an eight digit account number starting with a '5' and the bill for October 2007 has a new nine digit number. Have you used your most recent bill for the reference number or is e-billing not yet available in your area?

Does your number end in "01" or "02? Or in a "0"?
If it ends in a zero, it needs to be "01 or 02" or something, depends on how many people have lived in your house before you and had services.
The account numbers are specific to the house, a new tenant gets added as 02 or 03
I would guess you just need to add a 1 on the end.

Do you have an area reference on your bill?
Do you ONLY have broadband from Virgin? And does your account number start with a 5?
It is possible that you are billed on the remaining ex-ntl billing system. This means you will not be able to sign up to e-billing until 7th May, when broadband billing for those areas is transferred to the VM billing system.

Re: Trying to sign up to Online billing but only have 8 digit AC Number Need 9?!
ok why when they sent out the letter to ME can they not print my account nr and area code on the letter !!!!! because VM have no common sense!
my last known account nr was 6 digits on all my paperwork , so i have no chance of getting 9 digits, i ring up CS to be told i need my password, i'm ex diamond cable Nottingham and havent spoken to CS for years let alone given them a password. THis is a joke, if they can send me the letter telling me MY service prices are to increase why can they not give me the details i need.

Your account number & area code should be on your bill - account numbers for ex Diamond Cable services in Grimsby, which afaik came under the Nottingham franchise, changed a while ago.
The puzzle is why they cannot link your previous account number to the new one - logging a password is normally just a way of short-cutting the process of confirming your bona-fides - they should still be able to link to your original account with your name, address & previous account number???

They are on each and every bill (they are even on the electronic copies once you actually sign up for e-billing)
Nottingham changed over in October 2007, so as long as you use the details off any bill from that date, you would be fine.

Customer Services will always default to asking as password if there is one on the account (for obvious reasons). If you can't remember it, they can fall back to other security questions if you are the account holder.
If however you are phoning up for an account that is in someone else's name (ie Mr Jones calling for an account in the name of Mrs Jones) and can't quote the password, they will not ask any other questions.
Also due to DPA rules they should not tell you your account number over the phone anyway.

No, not until your bills do have an area reference.
According toy your profile you are in Manchester and only have Virgin broadband, which again means you are billed on an old non e-bill compatible system.
You will be able to sign up for e-billing from 7th May onwards
