Anyone else buy a cable modem?
Hey all,
I just wondered if anyone else with NTL that joined when they first put broadband out had brought their cable modem, rather than rent it?
I haven't used my connection in quite some time as my computer is round at my girlfriends... but as she is now moving from a flat to a house, we are looking at getting her (and my computer) hooked up with NTL cable. I'm somewhat bitter about the fact that when we called NTL to sign up, they now say the cable modem is included in the cost and there is no option to use your own modem... so now I'm miffed that I've spent £100 for what is now essentially a useless piece of junk.
So does anyone know if I have any right to get some kind of refund or reduced monthly bill if I decide to join up with them? If not, I'd be highly tempted to say sod them... and go join up with someone else.. but would prefer NTL as I had a good experience with them previously.
Hmm... and don't even get me started on the limited bandwidth !
Any help to let me know where I stand would be appreciated!
Cheers,
Steve

If you had your original BB line for 20 months you have already broken even, longer and you have saved money.

Yeah, I suppose that is true, but it is still a bit of a kick in the teeth that I can't just use my existing one and save some money... after all, that's the reason I brought it in the first place, I guess good things don't always last :/

one way of looking at it is , how much were you paying for what you got initially and how much would you be paying for it now with increased speed , its got to be better value i reckon

Re: Anyone else buy a cable modem?
You may find that your old modem won't be capable of running the increased speeds.
Also, you would definately find that if you had any problems NTL would refuse to support the old modem (it is your property after all ).
All in all you're probably better having one of their modems (and, as has been said before, you've probably broken even by now anyway).
 to CF BTW

afaik , any cable modem will be able to handle the increased speeds , it was only the pace stb's that couldnt go over 1mb

Re: Anyone else buy a cable modem?
If it is the old surfboard modem,it might be able to handle the low speed upgrade, but i have had a few faults where the only option is to swap it out.Unfortunatly for you,if you want to use the old modem, you might find it's access to the internet has been blocked as you cancelled.
Problem is,from what i understand, the old modems were on a 'funny' billing thing which wont allow re-connection of old modems over a certain date(or something like that,i'm only a lowly tech & not up to office politics!!lol)
