For starters, I am using the drivers from the maker of my sound card (the SC3000L PCI Sound Card) which are their version of the C-Media 6.39. Probably the ones on the C-Media site will work the same, but just in case... http://www.edio21.com/support_download_soundcard.htm

Now the trick. In the Far Cry System.cfg it sets the min/max hardware channels wrong! The C-Media chip only supports a max of 16 and Far Cry sets it to 28, or 32? I forget, but it's too high.

So, setup the sound for 5.1, then manually edit the System.cfg and default_system.cfg in Far Cry\Profiles\player for good measure and set these 2 values like so:

s_MaxHWChannels = "16"
s_MinHWChannels = "12" (16 min will probably work, but...)

The magic setting is the s_MinHWChannels one. Far Cry tries to set minimum hardware channels to a value that is greater than the C-Media 8738's maximum support!

Changing the same value worked for me and gave me environment sounds - but can i ask somebody with an Audigy 2 where the sound is OK what there setting is at?
