Re: new to games
OK, so I'd promote the games the clan play too, but, realistically what are your interests. Do you want to send you character around the screen whooting at anything that moves. Do you prefer simulations or puzzles. Maybe driving things is more your bag.
Also do you want to play agasint a computer, or do you want to do it against others, online?
There are so many gaming genres that good easy game to try is far too vague to answer.

Re: new to games
Tick, you need to be more specific about the type of game you'd like to play - do you want a war game, puzzle game, simulation, action/adventure type, etc etc.
Just for starters, I'd suggest:
Command & Conquer Generals (and Red Alert 1 & 2)
Real Time Strategy - gather resources, build up your base and beat the enemy.
Beyond Good and Evil
Absolutely CRIMINALLY under-rated game - a bit of sneaking around, a bit of action, a bit of puzzling. A beautiful game that should appeal to everyone.
Any games from the Monkey Island Series (and indeed pretty much any point-and-click game from LucasArts)
Point and click gaming at it's best with plenty of silly humour thrown in

Re: new to games
For starters, I'd recommend getting hold of Half Life Generations. I will say upfront that it's several years old now, and compared to today's games the graphics are dated, but that's not to say that it's not one of the (if not the) best games I own or have played.
This pack costs only £15 incl delivery within the UK, and contains:
# Half-Life - Game of the Year Edition
# Opposing Force - The Official Expansion Set
# CounterStrike - The Counter Terrorism Experience
# Blue-Shift - The Latest Official Expansion Set
Not only will you enjoy Half Life, but you're also getting Opposing Force and Blue Shift - 2 expansion packs - thrown in for free. But the cherry on the cake with this pack is Counter Strike. Once you've played through HL & the 2 expansion packs, you can then go online and play against thousands of people in CS. In case you've never heard of it, it's basically a modification to the original Half Life, and involves terrorists and counter terrorists fighting against each other. There are so many different maps that you can play, you will not get bored of this game for many years to come (I've been playing for about 5 years, and still enjoy this game).
Trust me, for £15 you can not go wrong. There are plenty of sites (such as Planet Half Life) that will show you what Half Life & Counter Strike are all about, and why they're so popular.
If this game does float your boat, then you'll be pleased to know that Half Life 2 & Counter Strike: Source were released last year, and take things to the next level. Even better graphics and even better gameplay!

Re: new to games
Any Dungeon Siege game is good for bashing enemies and the first two are easy enough for my children to understand what to do.

Re: new to games
That's seconded. But I took it rather more seriously and used to collect everything the bad guys dropped (wen I killed them) and sell it for extra gold so that I could buy even better stuff.
I used to HATE the sorting of stuff at the merchants - getting rid of all the stuff that wasn't as good as what my party had, sharing out the stuff so that the different people had the best protection and then buying the best value upgrades, then sharing it all out again....
Maybe I shouldn't have been so over-tatcical but it made the game pretty easy to play as most of the time my party just ripped through bad guys.

Re: new to games
If you like tactical and strategic wargames, try the Total War series (Shogun, Medieval, Rome) it's the game engine that the Time Commanders TV programme is based on and is excellent!
