But wouldn't that free emulation be illegal??? remember those games are still under copyright so if you dont pay for them your breaking the law

Re: Anybody want an atari?
This is a somewhat moot point. There are plenty of other reasons for emulation than getting round copyright issues, and I certainly wouldn't advocate emulation for that purpose. In particular, it's often possible to emulate a game with far better graphics and sound than is possible on the original platform, and it's often possible to slow the game down, speed it up, or change your experience of it in other ways - and there are save states, of course. Aside from that, it can be fun getting an emulator to work and tweaking it to work at its optimum.
Emulation itself is not usually illegal. It could be argued that if you use emulation to play games and own the games you play, this is not contravening the copyright on them. Certainly, if you play the actual version of the game you own (i.e. with a Playstation emulator, you can use your game CD) or if you rip the actual game you own, this is not illegal.
The grey area is where you play games you actually own but, since they are perhaps on a cartridge or something like that, you have no access to them without the original equipment, unless you build yourself a cartridge reader to rip them. You can often download images of these games to play with an emulator, although these are not images of your actual copy, but of another one. This is illegal, although many copyright owners will not pursue it.
From a moral viewpoint, however, it's quite clear that if you already own a copy of the game, you're not intending to evade the copyright, simply that this is the only practical way you can access it. I suppose it's yet another illustration of the mess the patent and copyright laws are in when they try to deal with the digital domain.
