Recently dug out my old Amiga 1200 which was totally stock up until last night when I aquired a compact flash drive with Workbench and a few other goodies on there. Some things work, some things throw error messages left right and centre (mainling moaning its out of memory)
just wondering if anyone knows when i could purchase 4mb of ram for this thing.. i wouldnt usually touch my 1200 for anything other then games, but this modding thing is making me curious lol

The Atari was a far better machine until the A600 & A1200 came along. My old A1200 had a Viper 040 with 8mb fast ram & a 3.5" 250mb HDD loved it. Used to have all nite gaming fest's with a few mates. Zool, Syndicate, Aliens & Cannon fodder! Awesome
been speaking to a few people on ebay the last hour or so.. i had no idea upgrading this thing would be this expensive.. lol especially for something as little as 4mb ram
shame really, already spent 40 quid on this compact flash setup... i just dont understand why i can play the floppy disc version of chaos engine on my stock amiga, but soon as i load up WHDload and launch it of the flash drive, it moans about memory I'm being told an extra 2meg would load games like cannon fodder, but might struggle with AGA games like Chaos Engine

Actually the Atari was better than the Amiga at one thing and one thing only - MIDI. The Amiga was the better machine down to one chip codenamed 'Fat Agnus'
Fat Agnus was a BLITTER chip - Block Image Transfer - it speeded up memory operations vastly and was the key to smooth scrolling and copper effects on the Amiga. The Atari had the socket to take the chip but Atari never managed to license it for the ST.
Around the same time Atari was working on it's handheld colour games console - the Lynx, however they had problems with the software to develop the Lynx games - it wouldn't run properly on the ST so they turned to their rivals - Commodore, most Lynx software was developed on Amigas and some PCs (Amigas were by far the cheaper option than the PCs of the day) to be transferred to the Lynx development consoles (Lynx connected to what was known as the 'pinky unit')
At their heart both machines were similar, both were based around 512k Ram and the Motorola MC68000 CPU at the same clock speed, but the Amiga having the blitter was what gave it the edge overall.

Re: Amiga 1200 Question
I have my Amiga 600 wild ,weird and wacky pack still in the box sitting at the bottom of my wardrobe, perhaps i should get it out to play escape from coditz or base jumpers (Underpants!)
I used to have an A500+ - xcopy was a good thing back then and I used to go to the computer clubs as well
I even bought HD attachment for I'm sure it was something like 40mb and I paid like £299 for it.
Last year I recently got a CD32 from ebay its amazing how dated they are now....I got the CD32 when it first came out £369 had nearly every game for it before they went bust
