So it's gaming without a console but you need their console ????
I do wish they'd get the terminology right.. In the end it's just a simple case of all storage and most of the processing is done via the cloud with display and inputs left to the console..
The ISP's will be rubbing their hands with glee as it'll help sell Unlimited accounts (though the gamers will then be frustrated by FUPs)

Re: Onlive 'cloud console' to get UK launch
Why bother at all?
The graphics data is compressed to the point that the image quality is compromised! why stifle advancements in graphics processing technology and peoples' investment in high definition displays to suit their flawed agenda.
Seemed like a good idea at the time perhaps but it's no longer valid. The cost of storage is negligible and domestic broadband speeds are rapidly increasing. There's no reason why the next generation of consoles cannot support a full, digital distribution model even for AAA games.

Re: Onlive 'cloud console' to get UK launch
I think the selling point is the variation of games available on very short notice. even a small game on a modern console would take a good 10-20 minutes to download on a fast connection, then if you want to swap games you again have to wait. This system could theoretically have thousands of games ready to play

This was mentioned on BBC Click a couple of weeks ago, this setup could also work on smartphones.
As the link says its hoping to deals with ISP so users don't hit there limits.

If I didn't work with Citrix I'd be more optimistic, but can't help feel that ppl will be annoyed by session disconnections etc.
It's bad enough that some PC games won't work, even if you're just playing at home single player if the publisher game of the game is having server troubles

Personally I think it is a pretty good idea. I will at least be giving it a try to see how well it works. You can even play via an iPad too.
