You will be. KOTOR, Mass Effect 1, & Dragon Age all let you have a male or female character. I can't see BioWare suddenly changing that for Mass Effect 2, especially given that they're making such a big thing of carrying on from your ME1 save.
This is one of my most anticipated games of next year - roll on 29th January!

You don't need to keep it, but if you do then you will be able to carry over your character plus certain important choices from ME1.

Would anyone actually recommend playing 1 before I buy 2?

Yes, undoubtedly. 1 is a great game on it's own and knowing the story going into the second one will likely make that even more enjoyable.

Yes! It's a highly story-driven action RPG & it wouldn't really make much sense to play no.1 without having played no.1.

The original Mass Effect is on sale on Steam for £3.25 with 5 hours left - the cheapest I've seen it anywhere:
http://store.steampowered.com/
If you haven't played it yet, or are thinking about getting Mass Effect 2, then it seems like a bargain at this price.

Roll on the 29th Finally put my pre-order down for this with Game yesterday as part of their pre-order 3 games get £15 worth of credit offer\vouchers or something. Put this down, Dantes Inferno, Heavy rain and Final Fantasy. Will probably put BFBC2 down to soon. To much in the comming months that am having to pick carefully.

You had any experince with a pre-order from them ? Usually turn up on time ? I'm tempted to get it from there now just hope it does not effect my current deal with Game.
Damn just noticed that HMV have the excluisve on the Heavy Rain special edition for the same price as Games standard version so just changed that order to. Oh well. Add BFBC2 and should still qualify for the deal. I think anyway.

I'm actually having mix feelings about this now. I'm trying to get into ME1 but the part I'm on is really annoying me. I believe it's the first main boss on snow planet. I think it's called Navaro, I'm not sure.

HA HA, try playing it on Insanity with an engineer under level 50. She's a total nightmare. Took me about a dozen or so trys and then a further dozen or so more when I finally got her weak enough ater the waves of Asari that she started to move around.
I swear, if I ever hear Marina Sirtis's voice again I'm a break or hit something
