It has always annoyed me that there is no switch on the brick.

Same here, why should it use power when not in use?
And don't say switch it off at the plug, there are no switches here!

er um pull the plug from the socket

In fact most transformers seem to be using power even if they are not connected to the charged device. You only have to touch them to feel the warmth and know power is being used. That is an increasing problem in these days when we should be worried about our energy use.
