Fraps - Jerky
Hi,
I have Fraps 2.9 Ver, When running it on my system playing WOW it slows the game down a little, the recording it makes is really shoddy after recording.
The settings i am using for fraps is 60fps full screen, pretty much all the settings for wow are on maximum, but i am using a Quad core, 3gb RAM.
I've seen way less powerfull PC's create video's using fraps that are smooth, I put it down to the version of fraps that i am using but all i found out is that Version 2.9 was best for Vista, so far in my book it's useless.
I lowered the framerate in fraps down to 30fps, it didnt change the recordings.
Has anyone got any idea's how I can get to record in game video smoothly?

Re: Fraps - Jerky
24fps is all you need. As for smooth quality, try using Task Manager to give Fraps a higher priority than WoW. This can be done by right clicking on the process and selecting "Set Priority". I'd select above normal personally.

Re: Fraps - Jerky
Not sure, i right clicked and said run as administrator then tried to set priority to high but i still get accessed denied.
running at 24 frames isnt too bad, but still jerky as hell, almost like im running an older machine, not what i expect from quad core with the ammount of ram I have and minimal things running.

Re: Fraps - Jerky
Mmmm quite a strange one. I can't really comment as I have never used FRAPS on Vista, which doesn't help you much. Have you tried the FRAPS SUPPORT section at all? Or tried the members area?

Re: Fraps - Jerky
It is a strange one. I have never had issues with FRAPS being jerky when using it in XP. Try and contact them to say if they can shed any further light on the issue. Other than that make sure your Vista account has administrator privilages in order to set the priority in Task Manager.
When I have used FRAPS previously in XP, I have noticed some drop in FPS, but not much and certainly nothing that would make it jerky.
How have your avi files turned out? Do they show the jerkiness too?
Sorry I couldn't of been of further help, but as I have said, I have never used it in Vista.

Re: Fraps - Jerky
The avi files turn out jerky, when i run fraps with wow the game itself slows down and becomes jerky, hence the avi picks it up, but running it on my system shouldnt cause it to become clunky, unless fraps is using up MAJOR process power. I even set fraps to record 1/2 screen at 25fps but it still becomes jerky.
My settings in wow......
Res - 1680x1050 (Wide)
Multisampling - 24bit Colour 24 bit depth 8x mutisampling
All world appearance settings - Maximum
Special effects - All ticked

Re: Fraps - Jerky
Have you tried setting core affinity? You have a quad core, let WoW use Core 1 and 2, and Fraps use 3.
Windows does all it's background crap on Core 0.
This can be done by right clicking on the process and selecting "Set Affinity". Process for world of warcraft is Wow.exe, and fraps is fraps.exe i think. Check the cores it can use, uncheck the ones it cannot. Sadly, if this helps you'd have to do it everytime you record, as Windows does not remember these settings sadly.
EDIT: Just thought, with 1.3Tb of storage, you have to have 2 hard drives at least. Try playing WoW from one hard drive, and install Fraps to another then, record to the other hard drive. This way the hard drive is not fighting to read WoW files while writing the Fraps capture files.

Re: Fraps - Jerky
I will try that but when i goto task manager and right click wow.exe theres nothing, fraps.exe shows *Set affinity* but i still get the *Access Denied*.
Is there not a setting in Vista to allow me to run everything as admin? Its a bit up the wall i have to right click things to allow it to run as admin, whats the point in it? I hate having to do that but its not allowing me any access to set affinity or priority in task manager.
i tried closing it and running it as admin that didnt work either, which probably means i'm up the creek without a paddle.

Ah, you'll have to run Task Manager as an admin!
Christ, why didn't i realise.
Anyway, search for taskmgr.exe and run that as an admin, then try.

Re: Fraps - Jerky
I have two drives in RAID0 and it only -just- copes with 1280x1024 at 30fps, so your problem is lack of disk writing speed. Make it half size or a lower fps and it'll be fine. Single drives just won't do it.
