Re: a bit of advice please
The choice of game genre needs to be worked out before you look at specific games. Needs to be something you think might be of interest.
For example do you want to shoot things, drive things, have more of a long term puzzle or challenge? Do you want a real sort of environment, or something that is more fictional?

Re: a bit of advice please
OK, avoiding the really modern stuff for the moment, and thus allowing you to get into it gradually for lesser expense, I'd suggest the original Call of Duty as a shooter. That's set in World War II and on single player mode there is a a series of level you work your way along. If you get the United Offensive add on pack, there are still many online servers that you can join for multiplayer gaming.
Driving thing games tend to perform better with consoles rather than computers. It's a controller thing that the gamepads are more suited. For the shooting things type games the keyboard and mouse are often thought to be the better controller.

Re: a bit of advice please
what are you gonna game on ? the pc or a console? what specs are yor pc of thats what you want to play one?
you can get gamepads for the pc that work well with racing games. I would point you to Need for Speed Carbon or Need for Speed Most Wanted as a good intro to a racing game
I would agree with Rob about First person shooters and point you at Call of Duty 2 to start

Re: a bit of advice please
Try the Need for Speed series for driving games, you should be able to find some of the earlier one for little money. I would suggest Porsche Unleashed (2000) or Hot Pursuit 2 (2002). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Need_fo...d_%28series%29

Re: a bit of advice please
they are gonna look crap as will call of duty 1. A reasonable pc and gfx card will manage a lot better than any of them . NFS most wanted at least or Call of Duty 2 dont go any older as you will be put off by them cuz they will be bilge lol

Re: a bit of advice please
Hmm surgest tryin out www.steampowered.com They have alost of FPS game's avalible. They have the older ones if your comps not upto the job or they have more recent ones based on the source engine that are worth a look. Nice selection of games including single player and multiplayer games. Just remember to check the specs of the game against your machine b4 buying anything. Assuming you want PC games that is.

Re: a bit of advice please
I agree COD2 will look better than the original. Same with quite a few games really, but when we don't know the capabilities of the computer, I was erring on the side of caution. For example this lappy with it's integrated graphics couldn't cope with COD2, and my last PC, which I only ditched a year ago, only barely coped with COD2, after I'd detuned all the graphics options.
tweetypie, you need to give us some idea of your computer's spec so we can be more precise with the guidance.

Re: a bit of advice please
I'd go for Medal of Honor Allied Assault, Max payne 1 or 2, I've replayed these games many times and still dont get bored of them, these also work on a lower spec machine, I played these on a Duron 800 and a tnt2 card..
Yeah I agree with Zing, nfs most wanted is a cracking racing game if your pc is good enough for it.

Re: a bit of advice please
Chances are if its less than a year old and run's Vista (poor guy) then it will be a decent spec. Wont be super but should run most of the games that have been mentioned easily Hope you find a good game. NFS carbon is sweet if your wana try driving out but so is NFS most wanted which came before it. Good luck with your choices

I still play Need For Speed II SE on a Virtual PC running Win 98, gotta love those Ford Indigo's. I think Porsche still hold up reasonably well graphically, of course it doesn't have all the wonderful eye-candy of later games but it is still playable.
