Free apps for converting videos to work on Wii/PS3
"Wii Video 9" & "PS3 Video 9", two free apps for converting your divx/xvid etc. videos into a format playable by the Wii/PS3.

Although, as the Wii only supports Motion JPEG (M-JPEG), your e.g. nice small 350MB xvids end up rather large... so you better get a big SD card.

Spose its just another code writters we can do this and show off jobbie

Here's one for £25 here.

Also if you bump the order over £30 by putting on a 1gb usb key you can take advantage of the new Google checkout and get a tenner off as well.

Hmm, might get that new hard drive from them...

Depends if the PS3 allows you to store videos on it's hard drive. Do that, et Voila, you have your own Video On Demand service.

Well I dont have a divx dvd player but I do have a ps3 - why spend £30 on a dvix dvd player when I can now just play them through my playstation 3 thanks to this little program.
Dont think its a show-off just a nice feature for us who want to run everything through one system i.e. ps3.

Also how does it do it through just 1 machine you need a pc to re encode the data so thats 2 bits of kit needed. Having to change the format from one form of compression will make the quality deteriorate so each time it needs to be moved to a "new bit of kit " with a different format your ruining the file.
All to there own but I would rather watch quality than a small file played on a games console

Re: Free apps for converting videos to work on Wii/PS3
I rarely have audio sync problems when converting.
Yes the ps3 does play dvds lol I'd be worried if it didnt. However its just another option for us - depends what your converting to I surpose.

Sorry what I meant was 1 system to run home entertainment. Not to do the converting etc etc although depends what you can do with linux seens as you can install it on the ps3.

Just set it up as PS3 drag and drop set resolution wanted and the sound standard and off you go.
Works really well to convert to AAC format.

Re: Free apps for converting videos to work on Wii/PS3
Can these cheapo divx et all players handle the latest mpeg4 (avc) version aka h.264 at high definition so at least 720p ? if not then your better off with the ps3.

I don't think they can do x264's just yet, but that's a small thing. you can get 6 films onto a dvd at very near dvd quality without the need of encoding (I use an Evesham DVD1000 and it's great).
I used to encode beforehand but it's always a hassle and pain. If I got a PS3 the last thing I would do is go back to encoding. After all if I got a PS3 I'd won't even use it for DVD, to pay out that amount I'd use it for Hi Def Blu-ray only.

Re: Free apps for converting videos to work on Wii/PS3
I have my pc connected to the same tv as my ps3 / xbox so i have no need, but i can see the use of having a ps3 in another room connected to a large hdtv, in terms of media compatibility though i've found the xbox will play more stuff and can pull media off a windows box with ease, and play anything if you setup media centre with a transcoder to wmv
